A journey of creative recalibration, inspiration and reclamation  ·  Oaxaca, Mexico

OAXACA

Oaxaca is overflowing with creative energy—from its colorful and vibrant markets and rich tapestry of artisan studios to its world-renowned multi-dimensional cuisine and abundant museums. Life in Oaxaca is rooted in a deep reverence for nature, craftsmanship, self-mastery, spirituality, tradition and experimentation.

In this vibrant setting, you’ll have an opportunity to immerse yourself in the diverse ecosystems, languages, artistry and cultural elements that led UNESCO to designate the historic city center and nearby archeological site of Monte Alban world heritage sites in 1987.

PANORAMA:

  • Sensory and somatic practices to bring you into embodied presence.

Your Hosts

Alyssa Benjamin

Alyssa Benjamin is a career/creative coach, writer, brand strategist and certified forest therapy guide. As the founder of Our Nature Studio, Alyssa leads workshops, courses and retreats that invite people to deepen their relationships with the nature around them and within them.

In her role as a coach, she’s passionate about helping people recalibrate and reimagine their lives—whether that looks like reconnecting with their intuition, enriching their self-awareness, illuminating their inherent gifts, up-leveling their career, calling in more abundance (money or otherwise), stepping towards their authentic power, and/or crafting a new path forward with intention and purpose.

Over the past few years, Alyssa has immersed herself in the culture, land and traditions of Oaxaca. The Panorama retreat is the culmination of her own creative journey in Oaxaca, which has deeply enriched and enhanced her life. She’s honored to be collaborating with so many inspiring, masterful and heart-centered artisans, chefs, guides and healers for this experience.

Adriana Quiroz

Adriana Quiroz is a multi-disciplinary designer and creative who has dedicated the last 7 years to working with local artisans to create textiles in collaboration for her many projects. Adri’s deeply-rooted relationship with her Oaxacan lineage has fueled her interest in exploring ethnobotany, energetics and the ethics of the entire textile production process—from soil to garment.

Her work is informed by her personal healing journey. For over 15 years she struggled with autoimmune conditions (Rheumatoid and Osteoarthritis) that limited her ability to walk. She dove into the world of Mesoamerican medicine, and this inner exploration led her on a transformative journey of reclaiming her true nature, putting her into remission.

Today, she hosts workshops, events and tours to explore weaving as a symbol of interconnection between the body, and the world around you and within you. She’s passionate about connecting people with the deep knowledge of ancient cultures and the land, and Panorama is a pure manifestation of this intention.

GET TO KNOW OUR MASTER GUIDES + HEALERS

Maestra Viviana

Doña Viviana Alávez comes from a family of master candle makers who have created elaborate, ceremonial beeswax candles for weddings for hundreds of years. Alávez started making candles when she was eight and, through hardship and adversity—including being one of the first women to commercialize her business without the help of a man—she single-handedly revived the region’s legendary 500 year-old candle-making industry. As the market for her candles expanded, she opened up her atelier beyond her family to any women in the surrounding areas who were interested in apprenticing with her. The village elders were outraged by this break from tradition and they confiscated many of Doña Viviana’s wooden molds. This tragedy forced her to innovate and she turned to nature for inspiration, carving a new set of molds based on disassembling natural flowers. These floral motifs became her signature. Today, Casa Viviana is a thriving candle-making enterprise where teamwork, experimentation and expert craftsmanship culminate in elaborate floral beeswax candles known all over the world. Maestra Viviana is a trailblazer and she has transformed the candle-making industry for generations to come. Her life story and creations have been featured in Vogue and Business Insider.

José García Antonio

José Garcia was drawn to clay from a young age and began sculpting figures of horses and giraffes when he was seven. Inspired by his love of the sea, García often creates fantastical figures of mermaids surrounded by the moon and stars inspired by the legends he loves. He also sculpts female figures dressed in traditional clothing based on Zapotec women of Oaxaca. In his 50’s, García was diagnosed with glaucoma and eventually lost sight in both of his eyes. He now sculpts completely from memory in his studio, “Manos Que Ven” (”Hands That See”) where he collaborates with his wife, Teresita Mendoza Reyna Sánchez, on the finer details of his sculptures. Teresita is the love of his life as well as his number one muse. The faces of García’s figures often feature her spherical beauty mark (which he refers to as “the moon on her face,”) so he will never forget what she looks like. He is considered a “grand master” and is one of the most respected artists in Oaxaca.

Maestro Alberto

Alberto Valenzuela is a master paper maker and artist. From his home and studio in the picturesque mountain town of Etla, Alberto has spent over 20 years exploring and experimenting with natural materials to hand make paper of all shapes, sizes and thicknesses. He often uses the byproducts of local agriculture, including banana fibers, agave leaves, corn husks and even chilis, to create new textures and colors for his paper. He even used a traditional paper fiber in the construction of his home—a type of cotton from the Ceiba tree (a sacred tree in Oaxaca) that is light, very buoyant, resilient, and resistant to water. Valenzuela is a lifelong student of ancient culture, human history, and spirituality, and has a deep reverence for the natural world.

Tata Alejandro de Santiago

Alejandro is a curandero, traditional indigenous medicine man, and Mayan priest aka “day-keeper”. For over 24 years, he has worked with ancient wisdom, spirituality and traditional healing to help people remember their true essence, restore their spirit, and reclaim their creativity. Santiago leads traditional ceremonies and works 1:1 with individuals, acting as a bridge between the Maya and Zapotec spirit world and the present day to help people heal trauma, grow their vital energy and reawaken their spirit. He has a deep passion for spreading indigenous wisdom, medicine and culture. His Zapotec (Oaxaca) and Mayan (Chiapas) lineages led him to study alongside Elders such as: Julio Reyes Aguilar and Maria Eugenia Aguilar Castro (recognized Mayan Ajq’ij), Manuel and Lupe Garcia (respected Zapotec healers of the Oaxacan highlands), Angela Mendez (Zapotec healer, author and herbalist), Tata Carlos Morales (Mayan Ajq’ij), among others.

Roberto Gopar

Roberto Gopar is the son of a healer and self-taught musician. He’s spent over 40 years exploring how different vibrations can regulate the nervous system and even completely transform a person’s health state. During his sound healing workshops, he plays many different instruments—from signing bowls, to conch shells, to ocarinas and drums—though his expertise lies in playing the maguey quiote, a Mayan instrument made from the stalk of the agave plant. Gopar has a deep knowledge of the aura system and his collection of dozens of singing bowls are tuned to incredibly precise vibrational tones that regulate different parts of the body. He’s passionate about helping people’s inner rhythms (heartbeat, brain waves, breath) better sync with the vibrations of the earth (the tides, the seasons, the moon). When he’s not offering sound healing experiences in Oaxaca, he travels the world hosting workshops, sound healing sessions, and exchanging music and traditions with others.

Gerardo Aguilar

Gerardo Aguilar is a Mexican chef, pioneer in the Pop-Up movement of unique gastronomic experiences in Mexico. In 2020 Leahy and Gerardo created Aguamiel in Oaxaca. Countryside Restaurant / Gatherings / Temazcal

From his Oaxacan and Yucatecan roots, his studies in Europe, and 14 years of experiences in Mexico and abroad, he has developed a high-caliber creative cuisine with a focus on the best and freshest ingredients, consciously sourced from original farms and producers, and avoiding industrialized ingredients. In his kitchen, Gerardo lives with corn, ferments and the wood stove. He never stops searching and experimenting with the best ingredients, which in turn transform into innovative flavors that become unique experiences, where culture is imprinted on each creation. Gerardo's interpretation of Mexican cuisine is that of a vibrant, alive and evolving Mexico where traditions, culture and innovation are always present.

David Sleininger

David Sleininger is a meditation teacher and healer based in Los Angeles, CA. After struggling with a variety of physical and emotional health issues for over 25 years—including fibromyalgia (an auto-immune disorder), emotional trauma, multiple chronic injuries, relationship dysfunction and more—he developed the system and process that helped him break free from his own cycle of illness.

He now spends his days teaching and guiding others to discover their own capacity to heal by helping people deepen their relationship with their body. His expertise lies in Somatic Meditation, a type of meditation where people put attention to different parts of their body to release tension and suppressed emotion.

Each day will vary in content and experience, but here’s an example of a more detailed schedule for one of our days.

Note: This is the longest, most active day of the retreat

If you choose to give up your spot on the retreat, you are eligible to get a 50% refund on payments made (excluding the deposit) up to 60 days before the retreat start date. After that point, there will be no refunds given. In case of an emergency, we will do our best to work out a solution. You can transfer your spot on the retreat to a friend with at least two weeks notice before the retreat start date. If a guest leaves during the retreat, there will be no refund given.

  • Please plan to fly into Oaxaca City’s Xoxocotlan International Airport or Oaxaca International Airport.

The best way to reach Oaxaca from most major cities is by way of Mexico City. There are also direct flights from LAX (Los Angeles), DFW (Dallas-Forth Worth) and IAH (Houston).

We ask that everyone arrives before 4pm CST on the first day of our trip to ensure full attendance at our group welcome dinner and orientation.

    Transportation to Your Hotel:

Getting from Oaxaca Airport to the city center is easy. The simplest way is to order a taxi at the Taxi Desk in the Oaxaca airport. Your two options are Colectivo and Especial.

    • Collectivo are large vans that take multiple groups of people into the city. They cost around $10 USD per person to get to the city center (Zone 1).

    • Especial are private taxies for up to 4 people. They cost around $25 USD per group to get to the city center (Zone 1).

  • Yes, we’ll send an intake form ahead of the retreat where you’ll be able to share any dietary restrictions you have.

  • Yes, prior to departure, all participants must have proof of travel insurance that covers personal injury, medical expenses, loss of or damage to luggage, repatriation expenses, and a minimum coverage of $200,000 USD emergency evacuation expenses. Insurance typically costs $60 - $100 USD. We recommend World Nomads, USI, or Allianz.

  • The weather in Oaxaca in February will be high 70s to low 80s. Boulenc will not have air conditioning, so please dress accordingly and make sure to drink a lot of water until your body adjusts to the heat. We also recommend you wear sunscreen or cover your skin—the sun in Oaxaca is strong.

  • To preserve the intimacy of this experience, we are limiting the size of our group to no more than 15 people.

  • You will have at least two hours every day for free time—mostly in the evenings once we return to the city center. This retreat is designed to give you experiences and workshops that you wouldn’t normally have an opportunity to participate in. For that reason, our days will be more programmed than retreats that are exclusively intended for rest and relaxation. That said, we intentionally created periods of time where you’ll have an opportunity to explore on your own or rest if you’d prefer.

  • Alcoholic Drinks: We do not cover the cost of alcoholic beverages.

Airfare to/from Oaxaca: We've found that flights from the U.S. to Oaxaca range from approximately $350 - $700 depending on the airline and how far in advance you book.

Transportation to/from the airport: Getting from Oaxaca Airport to the city center is easy.

Four dinners: We are leaving four dinners open to allow guests down time to explore on their own. Oaxaca has a variety of options for dinner that we’ll share with you on night one. Cost-wise, most dinners will be between $10-40 USD.

Treasures from Oaxaca: Each retreat guest will receive a welcome bag full of some of Alyssa and Adri’s favorite items. Oaxaca is bursting with artisanal crafts that you can purchase if you’d like. You’ll have various opportunities for shopping during Panorama, so we suggest bringing pesos. Exchanging $200 USD will provide a safe buffer. You’ll get the best exchange rate at your local US bank, but you can also withdraw pesos at ATM’s in Oaxaca City and at the airport. Any unused pesos can be exchanged for USD after your trip.

  • The Language: People you’ll be interacting with at the airport, hotel, restaurants etc. will default to Spanish, but most will speak at least a little English (if they can’t, they’ll typically find someone who can). We suggest that you familiarize yourself with some basic Spanish words/phrases. In our experience, people in Oaxaca appreciate when you make an effort.

    • Hello: Hola

    • Goodbye: Adios

    • Thank you: Gracias

    • Please: Por favor

    • Do you speak English?: ¿Habla inglés?

    • Where is the bathroom?: ¿Dónde está el baño?

Street Dogs: Don’t interact with the street dogs…even the ones that seem friendly. They won’t hurt you if you don’t bother them but please don’t pet them.

At Night: Oaxaca is generally very safe, but please don’t walk alone after it gets dark out. If you don’t have someone to walk with, you can use the DiDi App to call a cab (it’s like a Mexican Uber but for Yellow Cabs). We highly recommend DiDi over hailing a cab on the street.

Water: Do not drink the tap water in Oaxaca. Nicer cafes, hotels and restaurants in Oaxaca use filtered water for drinking, ice and washing fruits and vegetables that will be served raw.

Our Anchors

Alyssa + Adri’s Guiding Principles for Panorama

RESPECT

We have deep admiration and respect for everyone that has helped us bring Panorama to life. We value their ancestral knowledge, mastery, cultural traditions, wisdom and heart, and are honored to be in community with the many artisans, healers, guides, chefs, and farmers who have helped make this journey so transformative.

REVERENCE

We believe in the intention and practice of reverence—of showing care and dedication to ourselves, to one another, and to the earth. We know that when we put attention to our own inner healing and transformation, we can become a source of healing for others.

CURIOSITY

We surrender to exploration and expansion. We live the questions instead of needing to know the answers. We move through the world with an openness that encourages play and experimentation because it is from this place that the seeds of creation can sprout.
